The Dominican Republic

I am writing about the  “Dominican Republic” the population is 7.8 million the capital is called Santo Domingo and it is located in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea.  The climate is tropical, about 77 degrees all year, the religion is Catholic.  Our crops are sugarcane, coffee, cocoa, and tobacco.  The language we speak is Spanish.  Christopher Columbus' first voyage was in 1492.  He fell in love with the Caribbean island.  He named the Dominican Republic "la isla espanola" or the Spanish Island. The ship he arrived on was called "la Santa Maria".  If Christopher Columbus never put a foot on the Dominican Republic there would not be so much of a mix of people like there is today. Christopher Columbus died in the Caribbean Sea and his bones are resting in the oldest church in the Dominican Republic called Santa Maria Menora.  Columbus was transferred to the Faro Colon, a house they built for him. It is 120 feet high and half mile in length. October 12 was the 500th Anniversary of Columbus' death.   The Faro Colon is a memorial place for all the Dominicans and one out of all the important places there.   We Dominicans are proud of what we have and we are going to welcome those who come.
